William S. Burroughs was one of the most dangerous writers of the twentieth century — dangerous in the sense that his work genuinely dismantled things: narrative, morality, the comfortable assumptions of postwar America. "Naked Lunch" was banned in Boston. He invented the cut-up technique, influenced everyone from David Bowie to Kurt Cobain, and lived to 83 having survived heroin addiction, a gunshot wound he inflicted himself, and the American literary establishment. The gaunt, hawk-eyed face in this portrait is one of the most recognisable in counterculture history.
