He quit the Red Hot Chili Peppers at their peak, disappeared into addiction, came back, and then walked away again to pursue something more interior. "The Empyrean" — his 2009 solo record — was an album about transcendence, light, and the space beyond the self. That's the energy this portrait is working with. The brushwork is looser than usual here, almost restless.
