How much does a commission cost?

Commissions start at £295. There are eleven sizes, from 20×24" (£295) up to 72×72" (£1,495). Two-person portraits start at £355. Need a size that is not listed? Email me and I will come back with a quote.

How long does it take?

Roughly two to four weeks from the moment reference photos are approved, depending on size and subject. Tell me your deadline up front and I will be honest about whether it is achievable.

What if I don't like it?

Every commission carries a full money-back guarantee, so you can order with complete confidence.

Can you work from an old or low-quality photo?

Usually, yes. Old family photographs, screenshots, snaps taken on a phone — I have worked from all of them. Send what you have and I will tell you honestly if it is enough to work from.

Do you paint people who have passed away?

Often. Memorial portraits are some of the most meaningful work I do. For these I stay closer to a true likeness and keep the handling a little quieter than my icon paintings.

Where do you ship?

Everywhere. Paintings have gone to collectors across the UK, Europe, the US and beyond. Shipping is free, insured and professionally packed.

For most people, commissioning a painting is a big decision, and a slightly intimidating one — you are usually not sure where to begin, and the subject is almost always someone who matters. A partner. A parent. A dog who runs the house. So let me take the mystery out of it.

I'm Richard Day, a British contemporary artist working from a studio in Norwich. My work sits where pop art meets traditional oil painting: bold gestural brushwork, vivid colour, spray paint and ink, and the visible presence of the hand that made it. Over the past decade those paintings have shipped to collectors across the UK, Europe, the US and beyond.

A commission is the same painting energy, pointed at your subject instead of mine. You send the photographs, we agree the composition and the colour, and I paint. You see everything before it ships, and if it is not right, you get your money back. That is the whole deal.
