She described experiencing a long spiritual darkness throughout that time, a crisis of faith she kept almost entirely private. The fluorescence in this portrait sits in tension with that — the brightness pushed against the plainness of her habit, the simplicity of her life. It's one of the more quietly complex portraits in the studio.
