Morrissey wrote the soundtrack for a very specific kind of loneliness — the provincial English misfit, bookish and heartbroken, quietly furious at everything. The Smiths were supposed to be depressing but somehow made people feel less alone. This portrait leans into that paradox: the paint is melancholy but alive, a face caught between self-pity and self-possession. Hang the DJ — because Morrissey was always more interested in the song than the system playing it.
