Thelonious Monk is one of the most recorded jazz composers in history, second only to Duke Ellington. He built bebop from the inside — angular, dissonant, relentlessly inventive — and did it with a personal style as singular offstage as on it. "Straight, No Chaser" is one of his best-known compositions: no frills, no softening, just the thing itself. That felt right for this portrait.
