Shane MacGowan: Fairytale of Grit

I painted Fairytale of Grit to capture the beautiful mess that is Shane MacGowan. The teeth, the glare, the swagger—it’s all there, but I wanted to show more than just his face. I wanted to show the sound, the chaos, the poetry hidden in the slur of his voice.

Using oil for the bones, acrylic and spray for the fire, and ink for the moments in between, I built him like one of his songs—layered, loud, and cracked around the edges. The background bleeds with energy, like the inside of a drunken anthem that never quite ends.
